В то время он жил на острове в штате Мэн. Днем он придумывал реквизит для фотографий, который изготавливался из подручных средств. Джон находил картон на местной свалке, вырезал из него фигуры с помощью самых обычных ножниц, ножа и скотча. А вечером, на закате он делал снимок с помощью таймера на камере. К каждому снимку фотограф придумывал маленькую забавную историю: то хамелеон помог ему достать жука из глаза, то сам Джон помог медведю достать лягушку из пасти.
